My favorite lines from Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda's poem - Ode to the Smell of wood.
"It wasn't the sharp smell
of the pines,
no,
it wasn't
the break in the skin
of the eucalyptus,
neither was it
the green perfumes
of the grapevine stalk,
but
something more secret,
because that fragrance
only one
only one
time existed,
and there, of all I have seen in the world"
Only one time it existed and yet Neruda carried the essence in his heart and immortalized it in his poem. His memory of that one time. And perhaps this says it all about aromatherapy. The most subtle of our senses, smell, and how it plays a huge role in our state of being.
